A fire early this morning destroyed an abandoned house in the Eden Roc Subdivision in Puna, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.

Neighbors noticed an orange glow and heavy smoke just before 2 a.m. in the heavily wooded area, consisting mostly of ohia and waiawi trees. A bystander directed firefighters to the fire on Moano Street. Neighbors reportedly have not seen anyone living the approximately 20-foot by 30-foot wooden structure lately. The property owner is currently unknown, fire officials said.

The fire burnt the apparently vacant structure to the ground and the loss was estimated at about $4,000. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and removed roofing. The Fire Department reported the cause of the fire is undetermined and there appears to be no occupant of the structure.
